Local Area to La Petite Auberge
For those who want to tear themselves away from the pool and sun terrace, there is a lot to do locally.
Golf: There are a number of courses within a 40 minute
drive. They range from a 9 hole course to a par 72, championship course
only 30 minutes away at Les Vigiers.
Riding, tennis, fishing, and canoeing are available nearby and the area is ideal for walking and cycling. For those who want to see the area from above, balloon flights are available.
Thermal Baths: Approximately 1 hour away are the Thermal
baths at Casteljaloux. The facilities include
an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna, as well as pre-bookable
treatments e.g. massage.
Pre-history & History: The Perigord calls itself the Pays
de L'homme as the oldest remains of early man was found here and the Lascoux
cave paintings are thought to be the most remarkable in
the world. This area was fought over by the French and the English during
the Middle Ages which has left numerous Chateaux to explore. It is also
near the routes the Pilgrims followed to Santiago de Compostela in Northern
Spain. Other attractions include a farm dedicated to old crafts, wine barge
trips on the Dordogne, a Wine
Museum at Bergerac and even
the largest sand dune in Europe just south of Bordeaux.
Wine & Food: there is a fantastic variety of local
fine wines. Bergerac is famous
for its great red wine, often at a fraction of the cost of the neighbouring
Bordeaux region. The sweet,
golden AOC Monbazillac wines are enjoyed throughout the world both as an
aperitif and as a desert wine. Monbazillac wine is particularly associated
with the regions other speciality, foie gras. The famous medieval hilltop
village of St Emillion and
the Bordeaux district are
only 50 Kms away. The renowned Sigoules
wines fair, which takes place every year in July, is only 10 minutes away,
and is extremely popular with locals and visitors.
The local food is part of the joy of the region. Local restaurants vary
from those frequented on a daily basis by workers and lorry drivers, to
the grander Michelin rated restaurants. Why not try foie gras poached in
Monbazillac with apples,
confit de canard (duck) with glazed shallots, juicy sweet tomatoes, succulent
artichokes, six different types of lettuce, dozens of different cheeses,
wild fruits especially strawberries, freshly baked bread, walnut tart ……
The mouth-watering list goes on and on!
There are many local festivals and fetes, which are always a good way to experience the French style of life. Sharing the experience with local people is part of the overall holiday experience.
Shopping: For those who need retail therapy, there are
many local markets, practically one every day of the week including Sunday.
For shops, Bergerac is only
25 mins away and Bordeaux is about 90 mins
away.
